Cats

Having a cat can do wonders for a person’s health and happiness. Cats can reduce stress and help us live longer and fuller lives. The unconditional love and companionship that you receive from your cat creates a true friend for life. Cats are the most popular domestic pet and many millions of proud cat owners around the world provide testimony to this unique relationship. North Americans own more cats than dogs and it is estimated that there are more than 35 million cats in the US alone.

The intent of our web site “All Cat Breeds” is to provide current cat owners with the information they need to enjoy and care for their pet. It will also provide prospective cat owners with the information and the pictures of cats that they need to choose the right cat. From choosing the right cat, to grooming and feeding tips, to health care essentials, this web site is filled with sound, practical advice. Our cat breed directory includes more than 40 of the world’s most popular cat breeds, and provides helpful information about the characteristics, temperament and health concerns of those breeds.

For those people who already own a cat, this site will be an invaluable reference for the whole family. For those who are deciding what kind of cat would best suit their lives, it will be an inspiration. Remember, owning a cat is a genuine responsibility, and we must ensure that every care is taken to make our cats’ lives as happy as possible. Your efforts will be rewarded with years of friendship and love.

There are many cat types that are known throughout the world. The majority of these cats, both working animals and pets, are non-pedigree. These non-pedigreed cats are known as Moggies in Britain and domestic long-hair or domestic short-hair cats in North America.

Pictures of Cats

We have included many pictures of cats to illustrate each cat breed in our directory. As well we have provided a complete section of Pictures of Kittens/Cats including both pedigreed and domestic (non-pedigreed) cats. There are sections of cat pictures for funny cats, cute kittens and cute cats. We are soliciting contributions for all these cat picture categories. We hope to add funny cat videos at a later date.

Additional areas of our web site include a section on Cat Supplies, cat toys and cat furniture as well as a section on Cat Health, cat care and cat food. Our Articles section contains numerous cat articles that will appeal to the cat owner and lover.

Cat Breeds

Cat fancy organizations and clubs have been developed around the world to approve and classify breeds of cats, register their pedigrees and promote cat welfare. Some countries have one cat fancy organization and some like the US and Britain have several. The largest cat fancy organization in the world is the US-based Cat Fancy Organization (CFA). While the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy in Britain recognizes approximately 100 breeds, The CFA classifies many of these breeds as color varieties and recognizes only about 40 distinct breeds. This breed list will make up our initial directory.

Every description of a cat breed in our cat breed directory provides detailed information on the history, characteristics, temperament and cat care requirements as well as information on the cat size, activity level and grooming requirements that will be invaluable for someone choosing a cat.

Many visitors may wonder what happened to popular breeds like the Calico, Tabby and Tortoiseshell cats. Actually these are not breeds but terms used to describe patterns and colors. Tabby is a color pattern that occurs in many breeds and is characterized by whorls making a target pattern on the sides, an M pattern on their forehead, a necklace of stripes on the front and stripes on the legs and tail. The stripes can be solid, broken, spotted or ticked. Calico is an unusual tri-color that occurs in many breeds. Typical colors are black, red (orange) and white in distinct patches but diluted colors of blue (gray) cream and white are also found in many breeds. Typically most Calico cats are females as the male is usually sterile. The Calico cat became the official cat of Maryland in 2001. Tortoiseshell cats or tortie’s are usually black and orange but a range of dual colors is possible. Again like the Calico cat, most Tortoiseshell cats are females.
